The big G is a US vet, who served, among other places,
in Vietnam. Every year, he hosts the Salute to Veterans show, which takes place the
Sunday before Veterans Day and the Memorial Day Show, the Sunday of Memorial
Day weekend.. During the Veterans Day show, he plays music that has
something about veterans and military activities in the title, the name of
the artist or the lyrics. The show also features the number one songs from veterans days during major US conflicts, as well as number
one songs from the days the conflicts began or ended. During the show, Freddie j. recounts important
historical events related to the subject.
Smokin' Joe, who does the weekly
"Do You Know?" Trivia feature is also a veteran, with combat
service during operation Iraqi Freedom.
Since the Memorial Day
weekend traditionally marks the beginning of summer and is a three-day
weekend for many, the Big G hosts his Memorial Day Dance Party in a more
festive vein. However, there are somber occasions during the show when he
reminds his listeners about the reason for the holiday, to include a
recitation of the poem Remember Them
